In the early summer of 2018 Sidereal Fine Art Press printed this beautiful suite of woodcuts by Michael Spafford titled Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird. The woodcuts are based on the poem of the same name, by Wallace Stevens. Each cut describes one of the 13 stanzas in the poem. The blocks measure 15” x 15” with the exception of print number IV which measures 18” x 15”. The paper is Arches Cover White and measures 26” x 19.5”. SFAP enjoyed a long printing collaboration with the artist beginning in 1993 with the Labors of Hercules and including The Iliad in 2004 (suite of 24 prints), The Odyssey in 2008 (suite of 24 prints), The Twelve Labors of Hercules in 2018 (suite of 2 prints originally used to design the murals in Olympia, Washington) and Gigantomachy in 2018.
We were all saddened by Michael’s passing in 2022. We lost a great artist and a dear friend. The works remain with us however, as a timeless reminder of the man, the artist and the mentor.
