Intaglio Prints
The word intaglio comes from the Italian intagliare, meaning “to incise” or “to carve.” In intaglio printing, the lines or areas that hold the ink are incised below the surface of the plate. Printing relies on the pressure of a press to force damp paper into those areas, picking up ink and transferring the ink to paper. Intaglio printing is the mirror printing process of relief printing in which the ink is carried on the top of the surface of the plate. I often include chine collé, (Chinese collage), in my intaglio printing process, either as smaller color elements or as larger pieces which cover the whole plate, or both together. I tend to work in series and to use varied edition techniques to investigate and experiment with the subject matter.
